Buffalo 12:00 AM as part of the annual commemoration of march as women’s history month, the holocaust resource center of buffalo is hosting the traveling exhibit spots of light: to be a woman in the holocaust at the buffalo & erie county public library, 1 lafayette square from march 1-31. Created by the yad vashem world holocaust remembrance center in israel, the exhibit is free and open to the public during all library operating hours.
This exhibition gives powerful expression to the unique voice of jewish women in the holocaust: their choices and responses in the face of the evil, brutality and relentless hardship that they were forced to grapple with. The exhibition features nine aspects of the jewish woman's daily life during the holocaust: love, motherhood, caring for others, womanhood, resistance and rescue, friendship, faith, food and the arts. “we are pleased and honored to host this important exhibit at the downtown library during women’s history month,” noted library director mary jean jakubowski.
“the holocaust resource center of buffalo continues to be a great partner in sharing these provocative visiting exhibits with the wider community.” the public is invited to a special program relating to the exhibit – between history and memory: women in the holocaust -- at 6 p.m. On thursday, march 21.
The speaker will be dr. Karolina krasuska, assistant professor at the university of warsaw, poland and vice director for research there at the institute for the americas and europe. Co-editor and co-author of the first gender encyclopedia in polish, her most recent book is the collection women and the holocaust: new perspectives and challenges (2015). Her talk on march 21 will reflect on the reasons why some women are remembered and others are forgotten, tracing these differences across cultural, social and political divides. She will also examine selected key literary works and film productions that answer the question: “why does it matter that we pay attention to gender difference in holocaust history and memory?”.
